Gerald Katcher, a graduate of Yale Law School, became involved in banking in 1963 when he founded First National Bank of Hialeah. He sold it in 1977 and started United National Bank a year later, serving as its chairman.
It later became Mellon United National Bank, which he left in 2009. After a change of ownership to Sabadell United a year later, he returned in 2011 to serve a stint on the bank’s board of directors.
He has been active in a host of civic institutions, including as past chair of the New World Symphony. He is also on the board of trustees of the Aspen Music Festival.
In 1999, he and his wife, Dr. Jane Katcher, were co-founders with David Lawrence Jr. of The Early Childhood Initiative Foundation, which led a national movement for high-quality early education.The foundation is now The Children’s Movement of Florida.
The Katchers, who have three daughters, live in Coconut Grove. They joined the United Way of Miami-Dade’s Million Dollar Round Table in 2003.
