Darrick D. McGhee serves as vice president of government relations at Johnson & Blanton, a Tallahassee-based lobbying firm. He has 13 years of experience in state government, holding key positions in several departments.
Before joining JB, McGhee was the director of legislative affairs for the Executive Office of Gov. Rick Scott. He was responsible for advocating and securing passage of the governor’s legislative priorities. He also provided counsel to Scott and other staff members on legislative matters. In his role, he oversaw the legislative affairs directors for each of the executive agencies.
McGhee chose a career path in politics and public service while serving under then-Gov. Jeb Bush. “During my two-year stint working for Governor Bush, I was able to see passion and true conviction on display each day” he said. “It was contagious.”
Before joining Scott’s office, McGhee served in several leadership roles with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, including interim executive director, chief of staff and the director of legislative and cabinet affairs.
He also was director of governmental affairs for the Florida Department of Education, and director of legislative affairs for the departments of Business and Professional Regulation and Elder Affairs.
Born in the central Illinois city of Peoria, McGhee grew up in Los Angeles. He came cross-country to attend Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Religion in 2000.
While at FAMU, he also received his certification from the Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church Ministerial Training Program. He is now the pastor of Bible Based Church.
McGhee married his college sweetheart, Tikia Nelson, in 2002. She helps Pastor D, as church members affectionately call him, with his ministry. She received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in health care at FAMU and now works for the Florida Department of Health.
The couple has two children, Darrick II and Tania.
