Bosses for Babies

How This Boss Makes an Impact for Children in Florida

At the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS), Joe Cox has helped foster a workplace culture that recognizes the importance of supporting employees as parents and caregivers. Family-focused practices include flexible start and end times, remote and hybrid work options when appropriate, and flexibility during unexpected caregiving disruptions, including the ability to work from home when care arrangements fall through. Employees are also supported with flexibility for school pick-ups and drop-offs, school events, conferences, performances, and graduations, as well as gradual return-to-work options following parental leave.

MODS extends many of its benefits directly to employees’ families. Staff receive complimentary museum memberships, providing access to early childhood exhibits such as Discovery Spot and Sprouting STEM, as well as special programs focused on kindergarten readiness and hands-on learning. Membership reciprocity through the Association of Children’s Museums and the Association of Science & Technology Centers also allows families to explore museums and science centers nationwide. Employees additionally receive discounted summer camp opportunities for their children.

Additional supports include dependent care flexible spending accounts, family health insurance coverage with strong pediatric care options, mental health resources through employee assistance programs, lactation accommodations for nursing parents, and emergency hardship support for family crises. MODS also creates opportunities for connection through family-friendly workplace events and internship or summer job opportunities for employees’ older children. Through these efforts, the organization demonstrates a commitment to supporting diverse family structures and creating a workplace where families can thrive.
